About the filmmaker…this award-winning filmmaker (last year's co-winner of the Festival's Jury Award for his film Vietnam: Into the Dragon's Teeth. and two Emmy awards) grew up in the outdoors, around sports adventure filmmaking. His father is long-time adventure filmmaker, Roger Brown; Michael's earliest memories are the smell of film and the sound of reels sliding on a Steenbeck flatbed. The other side of his youth was spent on his mother and stepfather's cattle ranch in Montana (a different set of smells and sounds).

Extreme windsurfer Thomas Miklautsch and photographer Richard Pichler are travelling in an ancient Chilean bus from Santiago 1000 km south to Tirua - small "one phone" village in the Mapuche country. Sitting in the bus the two adventurers experience, in a surrealistic way, illusions and flashbacks that show all highlights of this trip.

About the filmmaker...New World Spirits is a group of extreme athletes and cameraman who always in search of adventures and experiences that are unique and spectacular to be mastered only by the greatest effort and risk of life. Thomas (born: Oct. 1971) is the founder of New World Sports, which has produced films and videos since 1994.

Brought up in the old Soviet sorting structure, they now have to adapt to the new social system of today. Engineers, geologists, physicians, these alpinists have for the most part lost their former jobs. With rudimentary means they design and make their own equipment. But thanks to their willpower, modesty and joy of living, they surmount all the obstacles, as personified by their adage:THE BLOWING OF THE WIND WILL ALWAYS BE THE QUEST OF THE ALPINIST. A lesson in survival…

 

Falling

When he can no longer carry her, he must continue alone through the brutal landscape. At the very end of his strength he finds the only thing that could end his struggle. To date, Falling has won Best Short Subject at the Williamsburg Brooklyn Film Festival and has been short-listed at other film festivals.


About the filmmaker…A Seattle native, Young studied fine art at Oberlin College and film at FAMU, in the Czech republic, before moving to New York. He has worked as a cinematographer, teacher and mountaineering guide. In his stories, the characters' rather existential struggles are set primarily against the rugged, natural landscape reflective of the Great Pacific Northwest.

In autumn 1998, well-known Slovenian sport climber, Viljem Gulek, decided to climb a new route in Mount Krvavica. He created an interesting route (100m, 7b) and dedicated it to the tragic heroine of Slovenian folklore, Veronika. Legend has it that in 1425, Veronika of Desenice was pushed over the stone face of Mount Krvavica - evidenced by large, dark, blood-red spots on the face, still visible today. The film follows Viljem in the process of creating the route and discovering the myth about Veronika.

A reflection of the role of competition in our evolution.
Glory and fame or the pleasure of a feast is pure and free. Man has forever pushed his limits in an effort to dominate his exterior and interior world. Every August, ex-Soviet Union alpinists organize a competition in the Tien-Shan mountain range of Kirghistan. It consists of a solo ascension of the Khan-Tengri, a 7,000 m-high white marble mountain. This competition presents a challenge at the limits of human possibilities due to the technical difficulties and high altitude.

This film follows Martina ‡Fufar, the best Slovene sports climber, and her father, an Alpinist, during training, climbing and competition. We become acquainted with father and daughter who are very close, yet different. He, an experienced mountain climber and mountain rescuer, perceives the mountains as an inseparable part of his life. Martina, a top sportswoman, perceives them as an alien, menacing world and prefers to return repeatedly to the crowds at climbing competitions and the sunlit rock faces of the climbing areas.

About the filmmaker…Born and raised in Vancouver, and Vancouver alone, Jeremy is a true B.C. native. After graduating from Point Grey Mini High School he was accepted into Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design. There he laboured away on the tedious task of learning how to animate. Skullduggery is the culmination of his fourth and final year at Emily Carr. He is presently testing the "real world" waters in search of commercial animation work.

Jeremy Blumel on 'Flight Of The Challenger ' .12cJeremy began climbing during the summer of 1993 on the wet cracks of Squamish B.C. and hasn't looked back. He prescribes himself large helpings of freeclimbing daily, with extra side orders of crack climbing and bouldering. He has enjoyed such areas as Hueco Tanks, Smith Rocks, Red Rocks and Yosemite, devouring heaping plates in each area.
