Cold Faces and Wild Places: the Vancouver International Mountain Film Festival Features Premieres by Canadian and International Adventure Filmmakers
The 15th annual Vancouver International Mountain Film Festival (VIMFF) is stoked to announce its line-up of adventure film finalists, including a number of Canadian and international premieres. 51 films from 10 countries will be screened during the festival which runs 9 days from February 10-18, 2012, all competing for awards, at three locations around Vancouver.
World Premieres
Soul of the Sea (Canada, 2012, 44 min, dir Ivan Hughes), following the journey of Hayley Shephard, a 40-year old New Zealand-born Canadian pursuing her dream to solo kayak amidst the crashing waves and treacherous seas around the sub-Antarctic island of South Georgia, all to bring awareness to an endangered seabird - the albatross.
The Denali Experiment (USA, 2011, 15 min, dir Camp 4 Collective), featuring free-ride skier Sage Cattabriga-Alosa and big mountain snowboarder Lucas Debari as they step out of their elements and make an attempt to climb, ski and snowboard Mt Denali in Alaska, the highest peak in North America.
Driven (Canada/USA, 2011, 24 min, dir Cody Tuttle), a story of the motivation and journey it takes not only to fulfill one's goals, but also the process of getting there; a story of a young climber who moved to Squamish to follow his dreams.
Crescendo (Canada, 2011, 9 min, dir Alex Lavigne), a little summer granite flavour with a look at one of Canada's top rock climbers, Sonnie Trotter.
North American Premieres
Kukuczka (Poland, 2011, 46 min, dir Jerzy Porebski). Jerzy Kukuczka was one of the most outstanding Himalayan climbers in history, the second climber to ascend all 14 eight-thousanders. A legend, he lost his life in the Himalayas 22 years ago
Moonflower (UK, 2011, 45 min, dir Alastair Lee), joining top British alpinists Jon Bracey and Matt Helliker as they honor their late friend Jules Cartwright by following his original vision of making a stunning and formidable new line on Mt Hunter's incredible north buttress in the wild mountains of Alaska.
The Long Hope (US, 2011, 55 min, dir Paul Diffley). The story of the hardest sea cliff climb in the world, on John’s Head on the island of Hoy, a wild and remote 300 m vertical wall. It was first climbed in 1970 by climber and poet Edwin Drummond. Drummond over 7 days; now Scotland's top climber, Dave MacLeod, sets out to climb the cliff in a single day.
Tatras Wild Ride (Slovakia, 2011, 22 min, dir Michal Babinec). Unique whitewater kayaking in the wilderness of the High Tatras in Slovakia, featuring the local paddlers and the legendary Tao Berman from the US.
