VIMFF Polish Night
Famous for more than pickles, Poland has produced some incredible climbers with some inspiring stories!
This evening features Bernadette McDonald who is the founding vice-president of Mountain Culture at the Banff Centre and author of seven books on international mountaineering. She will be presenting the story of Polish freedom climbers, who emerged from under the blanket of oppression following the Second World War to become the world’s leading Himalayan climbers.
As well, ticket-holders can look forward to a presentation by Eliza Kubarska & David Kaszlikowski where they recount the seemingly impossible expeditions (climbing not just mountains, but skyscrapers too!) on the path to finding, following, and realizing passion and dreams.
Two films will be shown on Polish Night:
Declaration of Immortality
The director focuses on the decline of the career of the great master Marcin Koszałka, provoking his reflection on his future life, when he will no longer be able to climb mountains.
Kukuczka
Jerzy Kukuczka was one of the most outstanding Himalayan climbers in history, the second climber to ascend all 14 eight-thousanders. A legend, he lost his life in the Himalayas 22 years ago. This film explores his life, why he was exceptional, and what he means to climbers today.
