'Driven' is a story of the motivation and journey it takes not only to fulfill your goals but the process of getting there. It is the pure adventure, not just the goal at the summit.
This is a movie that shows the true grit and passion of climbing. 'Driven' is a story of the motivation and journey it takes not only to fulfill your goals but the process of getting there. It is the pure adventure, not just the goal at the summit. This is a story of a young kid who moved to Squamish after graduation at the age of 17. Marc-Andre Leclerc was told to follow his dreams and this is where it took him. 'Driven' originally started off being about his one specific project: 'The Temptation of St. Anthony'. Originally an old aid route, Marc-Andre was immediately drawn to it. But as we all know, a noteworthy project can't be sent in a day. As he constantly worked on it all summer long, the vision for this movie changed. It started to become more about getting to know Marc-Andre as a person and what drove his passion to climb. When we weren't filming on his project, he would ask me to film his new single pitch routes such as 'Total Fascination', a 5.13b slab that he established right in the middle of the Smoke Bluffs.
Climbing is the journey on which all of us embark and everyone's process is different. But that's the beauty of it; everyone is different but we all share the passion. Climbing is a lifestyle, maybe even a life addiction. It draws you in and suddenly you're looking at every crack, line, edge, and wake-o. The feel of the rock against your finger tips gives you an adrenaline rush as you know you're back home where your heart is and nothing could be better than what you are doing in that moment. Marc-Andre's climbing goals won't end once he's finished this project. The world is full of rock that's just waiting to be climbed.
Director bio:
Growing up in the flat lands of Michigan, Cody moved to the Eastern Sierra's in California in 2006 and uncovered his love for the mountains. Trying his hand in the snowboarding photography industry Cody soon fell in love with climbing. Surrounded by talented climbers such as Lonnie Kauk and Christ Evers, Cody put his two passions together and sparked a new idea; maybe he was more fit to be a climbing photographer. However, he didn't start actively pursuing climbing photography until 2011 due to a tragic death in the family; his Nikon jumped out of the window of a moving car in 2009. Unable to afford a new rig, Cody put his dream for becoming a climbing photographer on the back burner and focused on developing new routes in his area.
During this 2 year gap he started to climb as hard as he could, kindling his passion for climbing. This became the foundation for getting back into climbing photography. After being in an intense lifestyle of climbing, he knew he needed to share his passion with the rest of the world through media. This is when he started filming. He thought if a picture was worth a thousand words, imagine how much a whole film was worth. With his careful attention to excellence, he was soon on his way to mastering short films. But he had no idea what to do after the shots were put on the computer. His only previous experience in media was working in a sound studio, so he knew he had much to learn about editing, color grading and everything else. This has been a journey and his film, 'Driven' is just as much about him than anybody else. His motivation and tenacity has gone above and beyond sometimes even his skills but he has pushed on and has learnt as he goes. This is only the beginning for him; the best is yet to come.
