Using only a hand-held video camera, newlyweds Bretwood "Hig" Higman and Erin McKittrick document their audacious bid to hike, paddle and ski from Seattle to Alaska's remote Aleutian Islands. Their life-altering, 6,500-km odyssey immerses them in the Pacific Coast's rugged beauty (including some familiar British Columbia scenery), but also leaves them at the mercy of nature's sometimes-cruel whims.
"Journeys like this tend to remind me of classic pieces of adventure writing," suggests Hig at the outset. Editing a year's worth of raw footage, director Greg Chaney crafts a classic cinematic quest brimming with unforgettable scenes. Hig and Erin's low-key commentary belies the hazardous predicaments they routinely find themselves in. When not running afoul of surly bears, they must contend with harsh Arctic conditions that leave their clothes frozen solid and their routes blocked by ice floes. Despite the hardships they encounter, these adventurers are far more concerned with the alarming environmental damage--be it beach erosion or glacial retreat--that they witness.
