“Why do you run?” It’s a question that every runner has been asked by the sedentary. It’s also a question that every runner asks of themselves when faced with adversity in training and racing.
As with any passion, it’s a hard question to answer. Running long distances can be uncomfortable, frustrating, lonely, unhealthy at the extremes and there is no real utility to it in this day and age, yet it continues to be one of the most universally popular forms of outdoor recreation. Using personal anecdotes and experience, this presentation will explore what drives one runner to run long distances over mountainous terrain in the hope of helping him to answer that pesky question.
Adam Campbell
Adam Campbell is a world-class mountain runner and the current Canadian 50-mile trail champion Over the past year, he has podiumed at some of the top international trail and mountain ultra marathons around the world. Adam’s experiences traveling light and fast over natural terrain have had a significant impact on his approach to life.
When people think about distance running, they tend to focus on the physical preparation, however Adam’s experience is that that’s only one small piece of the puzzle. Nutrition, physical preparation, emotional state, mental strength and desire all have to come together on the day to see you through the highs and lows of racing. He has found that you can draw a great deal of inspiration and strength from the people and surroundings that you encounter out on the trail. He will share how he experiences wild places on foot and the lessons that he has learned from a decade of racing.
Adam is currently an articling law student living in Vancouver, B.C.
