Join sisters, Stacey and Vikki Weldon, as they recollect growing up in the world of climbing. Born and raised in Calgary, Alberta, the sisters share their stories of sibling squabbles, competition highs and lows, and their discovery that climbing really doesn’t need to be taken too seriously.

"Climbing and I go way back. Since I was 9 years old, I have been huffing chalk, doing pull-ups and scrambling my way up plastic and rocks alike. In a family of four highly energetic children, with equally ambitious parents, I grew up in an athletically fuelled environment with climbing its beating heart. I began competing in climbing almost immediately after I began, working my way up the ranks of the youth competition circuit in Canada. Since then I have won 7 Youth National Championships and 3 Open Bouldering Championships in Canada. I have travelled to 6 World Youth Cups, with my best result being 5th place in Beijing, China in 2005.

Outside of the competition arena, my love of climbing and exploring outside has grown since my first summer of climbing outside when I was 12 years old. Since that summer, I have climbed up to 5.13d sport and V10 bouldering. I’m still a wimp at trad, but it’s always been a dream of mine to ‘woman up’ and go for it.

I am currently living in Vancouver where I am attending BCIT as a student in the BSN registered nursing program. I am also a coach and team coordinator for the youth team at the Edge Climbing Centre in North Vancouver. I plan to climb, travel, and work in a career that I love for the rest of my life!

"I started climbing when I was 11 years old, following in the footsteps of my older brother.  I spent a good chunk of my childhood at the Calgary Climbing Center inhaling chalk dust and training for competitions.  I was highly competitive during my teens, placing top 10 three times at youth world cups.  I ranked second in the Canadian competition circuit for the 2010-2011 season (just behind my sister), and placed 16th at the Bouldering World Cup in Canmore. As a young teenager I got my first taste of climbing on real rock, and was hooked for life.  I am mostly a sport climbing and bouldering gumby (with sends up to 13b, and V11).  I spent some time exploring alpine climbing in BC while waiting for a stubborn shoulder injury to heal, and have also scared myself silly attempting to trad climb, and have recently adventured into the winter wonderland of the Rockies to swing an ax at some ice and mixed climbing.

I spent the last two years in Kingston Ontario finishing my nursing degree, and was a founding member of the Kingston Bouldering Co-op: a not-for-profit bouldering gym.  I recently returned to my home province of Alberta after a 10week roadtrip in the states, and will be moving to Canmore to work as an RN, and play in the mountains."
