“The Vancouver International Mountain Film Festival is a fine festival of climbing and adventure programs that remain true to the heart of climbing. Held in the city that is the gateway to Squamish, Whistler and the Coast Range, it is a fine and relaxed gathering of sport climbers, alpinists and mountain wanderers ” (Greg Child)

VIMFF Tour car named George Oilwell
March 3, 2008 | 270x
Thank you to all of you who have sent us ideas for the VIMFF Tour car name. (This is our post-consumer vegetable-oil powered car that will be touring the country with the winning festival films. It was converted by dr. Björn Ratjen from Vancouver Island.) George Oilwell is it as the best multilayered name choice – it runs on oil well, it is an oil well (50 liter dual tank), it is a 1984 vintage edition – hence the George Orwell connotation, and, well, you may be lucky enough to find your own one, too.

Joe Simpson’s “Beckoning Silence” showing tonight
March 1, 2008 | 305x
The Beckoning Silence (UK, 2007, 73 min, directed by Louise Osmond) is showing tonight at 7:30 at the Centennial Theatre. This will be the only Vancouver screening to come and quite likely your only chance to watch this excellent grand prize winner. This re-enacted gripping, action packed drama retells the famous story of Tony Kurz’s heroic battle for survival on Eiger in 1936 through the optics of Joe Simpson. In telling it, it also forces Joe Simpson to confront a fundamental question – why continue climbing when you have come so close to oblivion? Simpson draws a parallel between his touching the void with Tony Kurz’s fate, and he finally confronts his demons on the Eiger’s North Face by rediscovering the thrill of the climb that once made him feel so alive.

Dean Potter’s “Aerialist” on tonight
February 29, 2008 | 277x
How many people in Vancouver had a chance to meet Dean Potter on a Leap Day? Well, here is a great chance to do it - Dean brings his “Aerialist” show to the Centennial Theatre tonight at 7:30. “Aerialist” is a live multimedia premiere presentation that combines images, film clips, monologues and slack-lining. It offers a glimpse into Dean Potter’s life and philosophy as a climber, alpinist and high-liner. The introvert character of Dean is usually reluctant in going public, and this is a rare opportunity to see the man in real stage action. |
